While speaking to members of the Council of All Pakistan Textile Associations (CAPTA), a mother body of all textile trade bodies in the country, the textile minister assured that Pakistan would start cultivating Bt cotton seeds from next year.

Rana Mohammad Farooq Saeed Khan said that a Presidential ordinance would be promulgated to enable the farmers to cultivate Bt cotton seeds from the next season onwards.

He added by saying that a trial conducted in the biggest cotton producing region; Sindh had delivered good and exceptional results and that it was time to provide the benefits to a larger number of cotton farmers.

He hoped that this would lead to a doubling in production of cotton in the country and would also help to increase exports from the country. He also assured the members that the textile policy would be implemented in full spirit.

He was also critical of the fertiliser industry which was taking subsidy in inputs from the government and not passing the same to farmers in the country, due to which prices of fertilisers was very high in the country.

The Chairman of CAPTA, Mr Zubair Motiwala said that Bangladesh is giving cheap power and gas to its textile industry, due to which it has been able to register positive growth of 12 per cent in its textile exports
